A Little About Nassau

A lot of people do not like the port because it is often under construction, the shops can be overly crowded sometimes, and there are people constantly pestering you to buy things, buy tours, and to buy transportation. I mean they will try to sell you everything. Finding transportation in this port is not hard at all and the taxi prizes were not bad. Nassau is one of the most visited ports in the Bahamas and the most popular cruising destination in the Caribbean itineraries. It is located in the islands of New Providence off the coast of Florida. It has a mild weather in the winter which makes it ideal for water sports and activities.

What Did We Do There?

We last visited Nassau in August 2021. We personally really enjoyed this port. While we were in port we got our passport stamp, took some photos, did some shopping, got our free charms from Diamonds International, took a taxi ride (About 30.00 I think) which was quite a way to Atlantis where we took more photos & played in the casino (we got free drinks while playing & even won a little money). After that we went to Junkanoo Beach which was free and swam for a while before heading back to the ship.

The Cruise Terminal

The piers and cruise terminal are right by Nassau's historic downtown. The terminal building is not the easiest to navigate and gets annoyingly overcrowded but the proximity to the capital city is wonderful. The Prince George Wharf (Cruise terminal) offers the following services and amenities:

Shuttle Bus
Tourist Info
Phones
Post Office
Pharmacy
Taxis
Car and Scooter Rental
ATM and Bank
Restrooms
Duty-free shopping
Food court

Shore Excursions:

Carnival offers many shore excursions on their website and once on board. However here are a few more reputable private online services and local tour operators. Keep in mind if you use one of these you are responsible for ensuring that you get back to port in time & back on the ship or you will be left behind.

Safety, Crime & Basics:

As much as you may read scaremongering reviews about Nassau's crime and safety, it should be strongly underlined that the local population is not the criminal association that some portrait. Due to so much false news nowadays, it is up to the reader to decide what to believe.

Besides the initial sales pestering, once outside the Terminal, the cruise traveler will be pretty much left alone. Like in many Caribbean Islands (and in most touristic areas everywhere in the World) when passing by shops and restaurants you may be offered all sorts of bargains but if you cannot deal with this maybe you should choose a different port.

There have been lots of reports and warnings about crime in Nassau however, considering that the port is visited by close to 3 million cruise passengers per year, crime-rates should be understood with an overall perspective.

Nassau has close to 250.000 inhabitants and you should be aware of your surroundings. Like in any city (in the US or elsewhere) basic safety in Nassau is really basic common sense. In one word, if you don't feel safe, go back to the cruise ship.#Nassau #Bahamas #Carnival #cruising #Carnivalmagic #Atlantis #portguide #junkanoobeach
