A Little About Cozumel

Cozumel is located about 11 miles off of the coast of the Yucatan peninsula. It is the largest island in Mexico and one of the most popular cruise ship ports in the Caribbean. Over 3 million cruise ship passengers dock in Cozumel each year making it one of the most visited ports in the world. During the height of the season between November to April as many as 8 cruise ships dock almost every day.

The Cruise Terminal

There are three terminals in Cozumel The Punta Langosta Pier, The International Cruise Terminal, and the Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal. When cruising with Carnival they use the Puerta Maya Cruise terminal. Each port offers excellent amenities and every service you will need.

Taxi Rates

These change over the years, so a good practice would be to take a picture in port for use throughout your visit in Cozumel. There is a large sign located outside the port at the taxi stand.

Bring Cash

Make sure to bring cash as not all stores can accept credit or debit cards. You may also not feel comfortable using your card, and you will need cash to pay for any taxis needed. Be sure to bring enough to cover any expenses that may arise.

Food & Drinks

There are many places that include food & drink (All-inclusive beach clubs for example) . But, there are many place to eat and to but bottled water throughout the port. There are so many places to eat and many that Cater to cruise passengers in the port. So be sure to enjoy a large array of food & drinks while visiting.

What Did We Do There?

We last visited Cozumel in January 2022. When arriving in the Cozumel port we had to get through the duty-free building. At the end of the building, we were meet with dogs who stiffed us before we were allowed to proceed through town. Once in town we enjoyed some shopping, took various pictures, and went to the three Diamonds International Stores to collect the three free charms in the port. Once we were done in Town, we took a taxi to Mr. Sancho’s beach club. Please see my review on Mr. Sancho’s. When we were done at Mr. Sancho's, we took a taxi back to port and walked around for awhile before returning to the ship.

Major Landmarks:

Shore Excursions:

Carnival offers many shore excursions on their website and once on board. However here are a few more reputable private online services and local tour operators. Keep in mind if you use one of these you are responsible for ensuring that you get back to port in time & back on the ship or you will be left behind.

Safety, Crime & Basics:

Safety is Mexico like anywhere else is always a big concern but any harm to cruise ship passengers is very rare. Most violence seems to stay on the mainland and away from the popular tourist areas.

Want To Bring Back Alcohol?

Mexico is known for it tequila and there are all sorts of stores that are willing to sell bottle to tourist. Just keep in mind that if you bring it back to the ship you cannot take it back to your cabin. Upon boarding the ship, it will be checked and kept in the ship’s storage until the last night before debarking.

Money

Due to the four million cruise passengers visiting Cozumel each year, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. It is good to know the exchange rate to determine if you are getting a good deal but there will be no problem spending US money in Cozumel.
