Mayan Ruins Near Cozumel Cruise Ports

If you love history or even sight seeing, then you don't want to miss the Mayan Ruins near Cozumel.  There are quite a few and depending on how much time you have you may only get to see one. There are two small ruins on Cozumel and at least four more close by.

#1 San Gervasio Mayan Ruins

(Approx 30 Minutes from Puerta Maya Cruise Port & International Cruise Port)

Opening Hours: Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m

About:

These ruins are located in the northern part of Cozumel, date back to as far as 100 B.C. and used to be a holy site for the Mayas. This settlement—the most significant of the Cozumel ruins— was dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. Women would pilgrimage here from all over the Mayan territories to pray at these temples, which still stand today.

Even if not comparable in size to the mighty ancient cities of the Riviera Maya, it’s worth checking out when on the island

On Your Own:

Cost $Taxi Charge + $11.00 Admission Fee Per Person
Address: 77684 San Miguel de Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Do take some time to visit San Gervasio if you have never seen Mayan ruins up close. Companies like Cozumel Tours will take you around and through the ruins, but you could save time and a little expense by taking a taxi to the area and walking through on your own.

Although you can explore the ruins on your own, some recent travelers recommend paying a bit more for a guided tour once you're there, as you'll learn a lot more. Also, make sure to wear sneakers, as the ground is quite sandy and there are a variety of small lizards and larger iguanas on the grounds. Bringing plenty of water and some bug repellant is also recommended. You can visit San Gervasio Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Restrooms, free parking, souvenir stores, guides and a snack bar are available on site. To learn more about the facilities available at the ruins, visit the Cozumel Parks website.

Usually overlooked in favor of nearby Chichen Itza, Coba was a very important city in Mayan times, and rather than a single town, it comprised a collection of settlements connected to a main pyramid. The site is huge, spanning around 30 square miles, and structures are very well preserved.

The best way to visit the Coba ruins is to walk around from site to site or to cycle under the green canopy of the Yucatan jungle and feel the breeze on your face! The main pyramid at Coba is the tallest in Yucatan (42 meters/137 feet/120 steps), and the good news is that you can still climb it, which is forbidden in most of the other sites.

Located in the jungle between Tulum and Valladolid, Coba is not nearly as crowded as the others, so you’ll feel more at leisure here. Very much worth the visit!
